Another taxing week this week. My dad went to the emergency room last Friday and ended up being admitted for 5 days. He's home now and working on recovering. Anneliese was very interested in all the machines he was hooked up to. She learned a bit about oxygen saturation in blood, heartbeats and IVs.
Language Arts
- Trevor did pages for letter H in his Handwriting Without Tears
book. He also did practice lines of those letters and played the Mystery Letter Game for the "frog jump" letters he has learned so far. He reviewed lesson 2 in All About Spelling Level 1 and completed lesson 3. Trevor read books 11, 12, 13 and 14 in Collection 1 of Bob Books
. Trevor did the lessons 9, 10 & 11, still all about naming nouns, from First Language Lessons . Trevor used magnet letters to make words from this last batch of BOB Books.
- Anneliese continued working on capital letters in her Handwriting Without Tears
book. This week Anneliese's copywork was to write the poem The Caterpillar by Christina Rossetti which she has memorized. Anneliese completed lesson 10 in All About Spelling Level Two
. She also completed lessons 9, 10 & 11 about naming nouns in First Language Lessons.
- Trevor continued working in his Singapore Earlybird Math
and listening to the readers that go along with them. He played Sorry! with me.
- Anneliese worked in her Singapore Math 3A
book again this week. She is showing much more confidence with her subtraction since we took last week off.
Social Studies
- Anneliese spent the week reading Meet Christopher Columbus
. We had a light week for history this week, next week we start some heavy stuff. Both Anneliese and Trevor watched the movie about Columbus on BrainPOP Jr and completed the east quiz.
- The kids got to start R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey Level 1 Life this week. So much relief! We are enjoying this so much more. We completed lesson 1 reading and the first lab. We are waiting to do the second lab until Saturday when we will be at a waterfront park. We made science notebook covers with awesome National Geographic stickers I picked up at Micheal's on clearance last winter. Angela (I hope I got that right, it's what came to mind and now I can't find it anywhere) at Satori Smiles has an awesome updated list of supplemental books and more to go along with this curriculum.
Fine Arts
- Anneliese and Trevor completed lesson 5 of Artistic Pursuits Grades K-3 Book 2 Stories of Artists and Their Art
. We made an animal out of paper mache after reading about Limbourg and his visits with Duke Berry who had quite a few animals, similar to a zoo.
- This week we read How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
. This is such a great book, I wish I had known about it sooner. We copied the trip on our world wall map, going from our home through all the places in the story and back home again. We colored flags for all the countries we visited and made mini-books with them for our notebooks. We made country mini-books and read J Is for Jamaica
by Benjamin Zephaniah. We made cow taxonomy charts and a cattle products and uses mini-book and read Grass to Milk
by Julie Murray. We made butter from local cream and used some awesome molds to make it pretty and shared some with my parents. We made an apple pie, had chicken and apple salad sandwiches and apple pancakes this week. Anneliese and Trevor watched the Reading Rainbow episode of How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World.
- Thanks to good weather the kids and I have been on our bikes a lot this week. Anneliese has logged the most miles, 10 miles! The three of us also took a hike around Snake Lake.
